Its funds span four investment areas – buyout and growth capital, real assets, solutions, and leveraged finance – in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, North America, and South America. Carlyle focuses on industries including aerospace & government services, consumer, media & retail, financial services, global infrastructure, healthcare, industrial, technology, and US real estate. The firm originates, structures, and acts as lead equity investor in management-led buyouts, strategic minority equity investments, equity private placements, consolidations and build-ups, and growth capital financing. Its real estate arm targets assets that offer value propositions to deep and growing demand pools – and avoids investing in sectors less correlated with GDP and broader macroeconomic conditions. The Carlyle Group expanded its asset management operations with the purchase of Vermillion Asset Management in 2012. Vermillion is a commodities investment manager, and the acquisition enabled Carlyle Commodity Management to expand its reach within the futures and commodities trading markets.
